Starting an X-Ray Technician Career

When working as an x-ray technician, you are responsible for collaborating with doctors to do diagnostic testing. You will use x-ray machines and other equipment to take images of patients' bodies. It is your job to ensure the images are clear and readable. This requires knowing how to properly use equipment and arrange patients to get the image. You must also keep records and review the images. Finally, it falls on you to ensure everyone is safe by following safety protocols. You may work in hospitals, laboratories, offices and medical centers. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the field to see a fast job growth from 2016 to 2026 of 13 percent. Median earnings in the field are reported to be around $61,000 annually or about $29 per hour. To become a technician, you must obtain a diagnostic radiologic technology license. To be eligible for a license, you need to be at least 18 years old, complete an approved 24-hour diagnostic radiography program and have good moral character. You also must pass the American Registry for Radiologic Technology exam and submit a completed licensing application.
